GLANNAU PORTHAETHWY SSSI (Part of the Menai Strait Conwy Bay SAC)

The north shore of the Menai Strait includes some of the most interesting sections of this remarkable marine conservation area, characterised by rapid tidal currents (up to 8 knots) with minimal wave exposure. The result is a very unusual environment which enables a rich fauna to develop on the tide-swept reefs, in particular, sponges and other marine animals which filter-feed on the abundant supply of suspended material in the water column. The area can be accessed from the Belgian promenade in the Coed Cyrnol Local nature Reserve, or from Church island. Best explored at low sping tides when a great variety of marine life is exposed.
